All this info was in the race briefing which I had of course missed. The phrase 'they went through all that at the briefing' kept on being repeated to me in a variety of foreign accents.Frustration increased after racking my bike, as everyone was busily putting their labels, various chip tags and bags of equipment here and there as if it was second bloody nature. I collared a few bemused euro-randomers and eventually worked it out.Confidence was also being eroded by the weather forecast (35C), and the extensive array of superior hardware. Disc wheels were ten a penny here, and everyone's bikes were bristling with things I did not have. Knowhere in sight were the reassuring mountain bikes present in numbers at Leeds Tri.There was still time to trail around the mind-numbing 'Ironman City', which is fine if you like pumping techno and being effectively told that all your equipment is shit.I had under-estimated the seriousness and entry level of this event. Getting up at 4am was going to be hard.MorningThe bus was at 5am, so 4am was out of bed time. Downstairs at breakfast there was a big table again with a bloody film crew going around interviewing people - not what you want when you are trying to croissant-load and worry with you head down, They even followed us out to the bus-stop.On the bus I chatted to a chap from St. Albans who informed me of yet more race-briefing stuff, there was a section on the ride where you would be disqualified for overtaking, naturally. Also, there are 2 climbs in the lap you do twice, one is 1000ft. Great. He emphasised the need to go steady because of the heat (He didnt take his own advice and re-appeared at the hotel at 11pm after being stuck on a drip). So, into Ironman bloody City and last minute alterations to my bags of stuff. Then confusion over where to suit up, this was probably in the briefing. I wasnt the only one, I followed a bunch of people who turned out to have gone completely wrong, luckily the tanoy bloke spotted us all, and informed us in an Arnie like Austrian drawl 'And now I am worried about people here with their kit bags, you guys should be in ze iron-dome, as was in ze race briefing instructions'.Good Grief, it still takes ages to find the Iron-Whatever. Follow ze orders Englisher. In a last minute loo-stop I am informed in the queue that wearing my vest number under the wetsuit would get me disqualified - bloody-why??I end up running back to transition to dump my vest, and then running to the Iron-Ness to suit up, then up to the pier. Please no more, I half expected someone to say my swimhat was illegal or something, there was no number on it (there was about 5 numbers on everything else + a chip), but no - I had made it, and in some ways the most difficult stuff was over.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=258 2010-07-20 15:05:40 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=258LEEDS COUNTRY WAYI am hoping to start sorting the teams out .So if you have not put your name down on a form in the sport centre can you please let me know ASAP.New members are welcome to do the relay. We needed 24 runners to enter two teams at present there is 22 runners. So places are available.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=257 2010-07-07 13:16:03 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=257Tuesdays RunLONG RUN (9M)RIGHT out of sports centre and LEFT under underpass, RIGHT and follow road to Eastborough until car park on the RIGHT, head up through car park keeping right, at the top path open up to Caulms Wood. Ok, its not running, but then again neither is orienteering, anyway there was no way I was going to contemplate running this one.If you want to head south from Dewsbury and avoid trunk roads there are basically two options, Holme Moss or Strines Moor. I decide to meet the challenge head on and take the Holmfirth route over the pennines, then it should all seem like down hill after. I pack 2 water bottles, some energy bars, a gel, basic clothing and toolkit. To navigate I have a garmin AND the sat nav thing that comes with my phone which I mount on the handlebars.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=254 2010-06-22 09:36:21 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=254Tuesdays RunLONG RUN (7.5M)RIGHT out of sports centre. He seemed very well behaved! Maybe Glenn could print out some of the jokes he sends.Oh, and he has done very well on the nurse front, they seem to assigned him a stunning blond. We had a casualty on the first lap with Maxine dropping out, that was a blow for the ladies team as they were already depleted. Kevin Ogden had an outstanding race in sixth place to lead our runners home, but for the best running style I would give to Mark Oldroyd his arms and legs moving in unison he stood out in all the runners. For the worst running style I will have to give to Andy Cottier he looked stiff round the hips and legs and sometime gives the appearance he's running lame. Our men overall finished second.Veterans overall were fourthand Women overall were sixthThe team overall finished 4thhttp://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=230 2009-11-21 12:52:39 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=230A Big Thank You to Dave BinnsFollowing on from the AGM on Thursday 12 November, it became official that Dave Binns was standing down from the prestigous role of Men's Team Captain, with John Calvert being the lucky guy to stand in his muddy fell shoes!Whilst Flo and myself were dragging ourselves over Stoodley Pike today, up to our knees in mud, I began thinking about what Dave has put himself through. The words that initially spring to mind are "complete nutter"! This converstion cropped up today when Flo remembered that the last time she'd done leg 2 of the Calderdale Way Relay, she did it with Dave - very steadily. This was because, as ever, we were short of runners so Dave took it upon himself to do leg 1,then keeping hold of the baton to continue straight on to do leg 2. Dave thought this was a good idea at the time - I guess he soon began to regret it - he did it though! Then cast your mind back to the Dewsbury Cross Country at Oakwell Hall in 2007. On speaking to lovely Angie (Dave's wife), her face said it all. Dave had been up at some ungodly hour, marking out the route in the dark (nutter!), followed by running the race, then clearing up after. I'm surprised he didn't play a part in the buttie making task for the runners.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=229 2009-11-15 11:40:39 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=229Club Night Out - All Welcome! We will be meeting at the Head of Steam pub in sunny Huddersfield. We will wait for members from 7.30 to 8.15 so dont be late!http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=228 2009-10-21 10:19:31 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=228Ive Lost my Running Mojo....After a very good 2008 with plenty of personal bests, including a London Marathon time of 3hr 11, I was confronted with 2009. How did it all go so wrong? How could I go from Love running to Hate running in one swift and unexpected movement? When the pain kicks in, I stop, simple as that!I decided to briefly tell you about my spectacular list of DNFs during 2009. Various titles have rumbled through my head for this masterpiece, such as 1 The Key to Successful DNFing2 How to DNF Successfully3 DNFing with a Smile on your face4 A DNF, A Failure.Brass Monkey January 2009Managed to get to approximately 1.5 miles and stopped dont know why, I just did. I felt upset about it but I soon forgot after wandering into York for an Americano!Liversedge Half Marathon February 2009Got halfway (better than Brass Monkey) before I decided Id had enough. Took my number off and ran in the opposite direction with a smile on my face! I was even brave enough to head back and watch the presentations.Trimpell 20One that I actually finished! I was spotted at around the 9 mile mark not looking happy was the quote. My excuse was Id just returned from a trip down under and was jet lagged!!! I staggered round in 2hr 35 compared to 2008 time of 2hr 20 I hated every minute.London Marathon April 2009This has got to be the ultimate of all DNFs! The creme de la creme! Managed to stagger over Tower Bridge (previous year I was skipping over!). I did actually have a knee problem this time, but no excuses, a DNF is a DNF! I have to say I enjoyed being interviewed by the BBC for this one and to ensure ultimate BBC coverage, I announced into the fluffy mike This is the Greatest Marathon in the World! Yuk, it ended up on the cutting room floor no doubt!I have to say, there were tears for this one what a flippin loser.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=225 2009-10-01 13:05:17 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=225Dewsbury Road Runners 5.25Mile RaceTwelve club runners turned out this evening to air their fast twitch muscles.Result:- actual time handicap time1 Kevin Oates 31m34s 55:292 Andrew Cottier 32:00 54:303 David Smith 35:38 54:284 Jonathan Smith 38:27 53:525 Andrew Parker 38:34 52:596 Andrew Stringer40:19 54:447 Paul Shields 43:26 54:368 Tracey Rhodes 44:06 55:219 Anne Milner 49:02 56:0710 Susan Hope 51:22 57:4211 David Whittingham51:46 56:0612 Andrea Woodside 52:12 53:571st Male Kevin Oates1st Female Tracey Rhodes1st Handicap Andrew Parkerhttp://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=227 2009-09-24 14:20:14 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=227Leeds Country Way Full ResultsA seesawing performance saw Dewsbury 'A' in first place at the end of leg 2, eventually finishing at 7th.Dave Smith and Flo were the pick of the B team, cruising in on 1h30m and 12th spot. There were some unusual incidents, including handbags on Leg 1 by a team that didnt want to be followed, and Andy Meskimmon on Leg 4 being repeatedly accused of cheating (a case of mistaken identity). There was no trademark vomiting from Mick Wood as he wasnt running.Treena and Join Calvert bagged a fastest mixed prize, as did Flo and David.Next year Treena, Flo and Maxine will be auctioning their mixed partner services on ebay - which guarantee silverware.Reserve prices are likely to start at £50 + transport + energy drink.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=224 2009-09-21 17:14:23 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=224West Yorkshire X Country Winter LeagueDates for your diary information from John Calvert & David Binns1st x Country Race8th November at Skipton 2nd20th December at Temple Newsam 3rd race is10th January 2010 at Stainland4th race31st January at Pudsey5th race21st February at DewsburyPresentation 13th March possibly at BaildonPlate Final 24th March in Derbyshire. All runners please try to take part in all of the above events.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=226 2009-09-21 12:44:55 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=226LEEDS COUNTRY WAY 2009Start of Leg 5. That experience left me doubting my ability, hating the flamboyance and sheer size of the race. I found the crowds distracting and the heat depleted my energy and spirits. So it was no surprise that I was dragging my feet at entering this years race, consequently missing the deadline! I had in my mind approximately 10 months prior, that I was going to defer my London place for the more rural 3 Peaks race, but something was niggling at me, something to do with unfinished business in London and times of sub 3.15. After a few choice phone calls and re-mortgaging to fund express postal services, I got myself a place in London.Training went well, my usual style of sporadic hit and miss sessions. Following no plan, just ear-wigging to what Flo and the others were up to. I have to admit I was feeling pretty excited about it, I felt quietly confident that I could pull it off this year. The Friday before the race and Flo text me 'are you nervous?' My response 'Im so excited and I can barely contain myself' and this was true, I just couldnt wait!http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=184 2008-05-19 08:08:18 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=184DEWSBURY RETAIN CROSS-COUNTRY TITLEA SUPERB TURNOUT enabled Dewsbury to retain the West Yorkshire Winter League Cross-Country League title at Skipton.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=180 2008-02-28 14:59:02 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=180Kev pays his SubsClub regular Kevin Hill confounded his critics by clearing his subs debt for 2007 and being one of the first members to pay up for 2008.Amazed pub regulars watched him write the cheque to Bernard Disken in Leggers Bar.Even Andy Cottier hasnt paid for 2008 yet.Kevin had drunk 3 pints.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=178 2008-02-15 14:50:30 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=17810k ResultsThanks to everyone who made the 10K a success. If you have queries about the results please e-mail me at b.disken@ntlworld.comI'll give it a couple of days before asking TDL to produce the final version.Bernard Disken Race directorhttp://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=175 2008-02-13 07:42:51 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=175WonderlandProgramme to watch 'Wonderland' BBC2 at 9-50pm Wednesday 23rd January.See Artur Boyt one of the top Orienteers in his age group and has been for many years.I occasionaly come up against him in competition, most recently last December in a National Event at Sheffield peak district.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=169 2008-01-21 16:47:51 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=1692008 10k - entries closedEntries for the 2008 Dewsbury 10K have now closed. You should receive your numbers by Tuesday 29 January at the latest. Please wait until then before chasing us up on missing numbers.DON'T PANICBernard Diskenhttp://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=170 2008-01-21 16:47:36 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=170WLWLAre you ready for the 4th West Yorkshire Winter League, it is at Stainland on Sunday 27th January 11-00am. It makes a big difference on the day when you know every step of the route, nothing worse than running down the wrong track then having to retrace your steps while other teams waltz past you on the correct course.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=156 2007-10-12 10:46:33 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=156Hare and TortoisesThe Hare and Differently Abled Hare event we had on Thursday evening (4th October) - which as nothing to do with the Hash House Harriers piece that Adrian sent out, but is an idea/suggestion from John Calvert - went down pretty well. All comments were good saying how they had enjoyed it, although one runner passing me up Carlinghow Lane said we could have had a flatter course.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=155 2007-10-12 10:13:53 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=155Yorkshireman 2007 Race ReportDid not get round to recce-ing this one, and so I come with a collection of hastily prepared maps and some gels to deepest west yorkshire hoping for the best. See a gallery of pictures here or the full gallery here. We set off down the hill in glorious sunshine, soon I find myself in the lead - this was not in my race plan of following for at least the first 10 miles so I slow down a bit. The first big climb of the day up past Leeshaw Reservoir is taken at quite a tough pace and a couple of people edge past me, which is fine as I have not a clue where I am going. Then comes a long and pleasant grassy descent following a conduit in which the pace goes steady. I decide to tuck in and chat to Paul a bit about races coming up and the Three Peaks, after all we have a long way to go.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=151 2007-10-12 10:12:31 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=151Mablethorpe Marathon Sunday 16th September 2007Martin Hall coasts clear in the Mablethorpe Marathon to win by over 8 minutes in 2hrs44m57s.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=153 2007-09-21 15:45:52 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=153Mileta 10k Team Photo and ResultsSome great runs from club members, and the women take the team prize.Ed: What is going on with all the hats? So it took me approximately 3.5 minutes to check out the London Triathlonwebsite, dig out my credit card and grace them with approximately 70 quid for the pleasure of chuckin myself into a corner of the Royal Victoria Dock joy!Five minutes later, I start to take an empirical view of what Ive just doneBike Check (albeit a mountain bike)Wetsuit errmh, No!A passion for swimming errmh, No! I actually need to overcome a fear of outdoor water, I forgot that bit!Trainers CheckLegs CheckTime to train Are you havin a laugh - Im a working mother! So here I am, some 10ish months later having cycled my legs sore, swam at Spenborough in my wetsuit on pensionersday, sending them all into instant cardiac arrest at the mere sight, had a couple of baptisms in Costa Del Pugneys and now heading down to London at the weekend, nursing badly blistered and weeping feet, why? Cos it seemed like agood idea to do a club run with elastic laces and no socks in twice warn trainers - tut tut!http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=150 2007-09-05 05:59:35 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=150Leeds Country Way Relay ResultsDewsbury 'A' team finish 2nd in the Leeds Country Way Relay. We were actually leading after the 4th leg (Bill ewart & Peter Hill) although they were 4th fastest on their leg, they overtook the leaders and the three faster teams didn't manage to catch up.Leg 5 saw us drop back to 2nd place, with Steve Schofield & Kevin Oates being 4th fastest team 68:13. Kevin had already raced in the morning finishing 6th in the Sandal Castle 10K so I think he would be a bit tired.Leg 6 saw our team hang on to 2nd place overall with David Smith and John Calvert finishing 7th fastest team in 67:04.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=149 2007-09-04 15:11:18 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=149Leeds Country Way Evening DoAs normal we will have the results, pottery gifts and prize giving at a small club do on Sunday after the race. All members are welcome, and a buffet (so some sort of snacks) will be arranged for anyone turning up.Try to make it as we dont do many things like this in the year.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=148 2007-08-28 09:03:57 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=148Leeds Country Way Teams And InfoTeam A Organiser contacts - Andy on 07786 925426 / drr@cottier.co.uk Team B Organiser contacts - Mick Please-get-a-mobile on 01924 450296 / mick@dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk Other Organiser Contacts - Treena on 01924 485951 / treena@dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk or David Binns on 07900468774 / david@binns900fireblade.freeserve.co.uk Please use the above contacts to obtain contacts details for any members below.TEAM AStage 1Treena JohnsonChris MaguireStage 2Andy MeskimmonNick GlavesStage 3Andy CottierAndy GuiseleyStage 4Bill EwartPeter HillStage 5Kev OatesSteve SchofieldStage 6David SmithJohn CalvertTEAM BStage 1Matthew BaldwinMartin KayeStage 2Graham JohnsonJean EntwistleStage 3Bernard DiskenRussel ThomasStage 4Andy ParkerGary JohnsonStage 5Maxine WordenFlora SkidmoreStage 6David GreenwoodIftikhar AhmedReservesKev Hill (Race-Day)Glen SykesJanet MurninSue LeeMick Woodhttp://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=147 2007-08-27 14:18:51 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=147National Three Peaks Challenge Report - June 2007On the 16th of June 2007, four club members completed the National Three Peaks Challenge in under the regulation 24 hours.Click Here for the picture and video clip gallery.Team Dewsbury Road Runners where :Angela BinnsDavid BinnsDavid CooperAndrew Cottier (Sub) Here is AC's write up.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=146 2007-08-09 05:03:52 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=146Race The TrainAll members are encouraged to come along for the weekend to what is a good social bash as well as a race. There are several races - fun run, 10k and the main 14.75 mile challenge. At point A the route enters the woods and takes a short sharp climb to point B. At B turn right up the main path through a gate opening to point C (A to C may be recognised as part of the Baildon Boundary Way). At C the route diverts left up another sharp climb to the wall corner and a loop back to F (points D and E are distinct left turns). From point F the route again picks up the Baildon Boundary Way to point G). Point G is a left hand turn BEFORE reaching the stile. Follow the main path from G to H crossing a stream by footbridge and crossing stile at H onto the main path.At H turn left under the railway bridge keeping left (the section H to I will have 2 way traffic but will be well marked). At Point I take a short diversion into the woods on the left emerging back on to the stoney track. Turn left up the stoney track until reaching Coach Rd J. Turn right at the top of the track and immediately right again into the fields. Turn immediately left in the fields and head to the field corner K. At the field corner turn right and follow the walked path back down to the stoney track (this section will be recognised as the reverse of the finish of the Guiseley Gallop). Turn left on reaching the stoney track back under the railway bridge (keeping left) and then continue straight ahead down the main track for some distance.Towards the bottom of the main track a path swings off to the left (L), follow this path up and over the railway line. After the bridge over the railway line (M), turn right down a narrow track over a footbridge and then back up to Gill Lane (N). On reaching Gill Lane, turn right and run down the road to another bridge. At the metal gate bear left into the woods (O) and follow a track down through the woods until reaching a main track (P). At the main track turn right back towards Gill Lane. At Gill Lane turn left then almost immediately right and right again (Q) down a sharp bank to a stream. Cross through the stream and up the hill continuing on to the far end of the woods (R). At the far end of the woods the route turns back on itself and comes almost back to the stream before turning right and right again (S) onto the main track heading back towards Esholt. At Spring Lane turn right then almost immediately left (T) up a narrow path back in to the woods. Follow the route through the woods climbing up to meet the main path at a stile (U).Turn left over the stile and continue on the main path to the gate opening in the wall (point C revisited). Through the gate opening take a narrow path diagonally off to the right (V) running along the top of the woods. Continue along this narrow path until reaching a short descent back to the main path. Turn left back up the main path (past point B again) and continue up the path almost to the gate opening in the wall. Here the route turns right down through the woods (this will be recognised as the reverse of the route taken up through the woods in the Guiseley Gallop) to reach the finish by the entrance to the woods (point A).Drinks/Changing afterwards at Esholt Sports Club PLEASE REMOVE ALL MUDDY SHOES BEFORE ENTERING THE CLUBHOUSE.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=125 2007-02-14 01:57:24 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=125Dewsbury Cross Country 2007The Dewsbury Cross Country will be at Oakwell Hall Country Park on the 7th of January 2007 starting at 11am.There are limited toilet facilities and no showers. Park in Oakwell Hall Country Park car park (see P on map) or on the main A652 Bradford-Dewsbury road. Full details of the course and directions are given later on in this article. The course is hilly, ran on paths, turf and woodland, and unsuitable for spikes (total height gained is 550 ft, see profile further down). It consists of 3 loops which cover the grounds of the park and north of the M62. The approximate length is 4.75 miles, and will be well taped and marshalled. Please follow the instructions from the Marshal's as there is a couple of points where runners may cross - It will be advised that runners stay to their right. We have arranged to meet after the race at the White Bear Public House situated approximatly 1 mile from the park. Full directions will be given on the day, but it is virtually an immediate left turn, doubling back on yourself as you leave the car park, carrying on along the road, passing a childrens play area on your left, turning right along Kings Drive. The White Bear is at the end of the drive. Signs will be put out on the day pointing you in the right direction, if I remember!!!We hope that many of you can stay, as the landlady is willing to put hot food on for us.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=121 2007-01-04 11:54:15 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=121Its Cross Country Time Again ...Are here again ...Details of the 5 winter cross country races can be found by clicking here. The bigger the team we get, the more chance we have of winning things - all members are welcome to compete for us free of charge!Sometimes there is even a buffet afterwards! Its Grrrrrrrrrrrreat!http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=119 2006-10-05 09:01:53 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=119Dewsbury Road Runners Cross Country Race - 4 milesClick Here to view pictures and video clips. Before the race I had asked for a couple of marshals, 4 came rushing forward. Bill Ewart knee trouble, didn't fancy the run, Andy Cottier said he wasn't up for the race, but in the finish he was chief photographer, and Brian Cooper and Jack Bretherick pleaded age.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=114 2006-09-02 12:20:01 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=114West Yorkshire 5 Mile Road RaceA very hot day, not a big field, but this race is basically a Fire Service Race which is open to the public.Having run this race previously I know we run out of the Fire Station and run up to Oakenshaw, and then drop down to Hunsworth, and then climb back up to Birkenshaw, and do a small loop into the Fire Station before finishing. The guy who's starting the race warns us that it is really hot and to be aware of this. The race starts and I run the first mile in about 6.35. I decide I am not going to keep this up and try to run at a more sensible pace for an old b**tard like me. A drag up to Oakenshaw and then we turn left and we have a nice run down to Hunsworth. When we get to the bottom of Hunsworth my head feels as though it's going to explode, we turn and start climbing back up.Some guys in front who passed me previously are beginning to walk, this looks promising as I gradually pass them and reach the entrance to the Fire Station.I see one guy in front who I recognise from Strathclyde Fire Brigade, who I normally have a tussle with, he is walking, I pass him slowly and head for the finish, he suddenly steams past me and I can do nothing to respond. I finish and grab a drink.Thank God that's over.%[339]%http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=116 2006-08-31 07:34:30 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=116The Porker Chronicles - A continuing sagaIts Del Boy I'm back after 6 months of non running and gaining two and a half stone Im back with the club.Take my advice wise ones; never buy a satellite navigation system from McDonalds!I now tip the scales at 14 stone, four stone heavier than when I first joined the club "8 years ago".In one year I've gone from a size medium to large then X large and I'm too tight to buy new clothes, so I've got to shed a couple of stone, plus I'm fed up with Asda thinking I'm walking out of the store with frozen Turkeys up my jumper.Speaking of Turkey's, Mick Wood has been sending me copies of the newsletter (sorry Mick) or as its now better known as the anaesthetist monthly in NHS circles, who now give them to patients just prior to an operation; so they are assured to be firmly knocked out.Mick could get an OBE for saving the NHS millions of pounds!http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=115 2006-08-31 07:25:20 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=115Story Cannot Be FoundThe story you requested could not be found. Please inform the webmaster if you think there is a problem.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=0 2006-07-28 08:10:24 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=0Howarth Hobble 2006 ReportAs I complete last minute preparations I feel about unsure about the whole thing. I try to forget about this, but Julian looks decidely nervous right up the the whistle! The route is 11 miles long (theoretic minimum) and clocks up 4400 feet of climbing. Basically, your run up to the Helvellyn ridge from the north, near Great Dodd, then run the ridge to the summit cairn of Helvellyn and back. The gruesome start lives up to expectations, 1500 feet on grass mainly, with nothing to break up the strain on the calves - i resort to zig-zagging. At the top the climb continues at a lesser gradient - but is still un-runnable. When I do reach the checkpoint my legs are like jelly, and I cant run at all for a while. The ridge is no cakewalk either, with constantly changing terrain, from boulder fields to narrow troughed paths, you never find any rythmn and you are constantly being challenged by route decisions over boggy bits, rocky outcrops etc. Here I am approaching the summit of Raise.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=83 2005-05-25 08:09:35 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=83St Bedes Cross CountryThere was a great turn out for the Esholt Cross Country, with some 23 members taking part - the largest number for quite some time. The weather was cool and pleasant, and the conditions reasonable underfoot. After all there's no backpack to carry and they actually feed you, and its only 100 miles (a normal training week). I decided it would be good to run it this year and take my wife Julie as she had taken up running and wanted to run a multi stage race.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=47 2004-11-28 10:21:43 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=47Mileta 10, SpenboroughIts 10am Sunday morning and I am sat in my Car in the car park at Princess Mary Running Track Cleckheaton and I am both cold and tired. Why am I here?Answer: To do the Mileta 10mile Road Race. Why am I cold and tired ?Answer: Because I spent yesterday travelling home from a 2 week holiday in Corfu. So why tired I hear you ask, well the Holiday was a 210 kilometre walk around the island. Its now 10.20am the race starts at 10.30am most people are warming up in shorts and vests, I am still keeping warm in the Car.Eventually Treena and Heather talk me out of the Car and track suit and I have a short jog to the Start Line on the running track. Here if find Bill, Martin, Rodger and Andy ( apologies if I have forgotten anyone else). After the usual lecture about obeying marshals and the roads being open to traffic the race starts.Down the back straight and round the bend then out of the gate through the Car Park and onto the road toward Cleckheaton. As we go through the gate, to my surprise I find myself in the lead. This strange situation continues to the Bus station ( about 1mile) when the winner of the race come past and the pulls away up the climb.Still in Second place at the top of the first climb (2 miles) but I can tell there is a group hard on my heels.Up the next climb the guy who ends up second comes past me and as the winner had done before he pulls away. The rest of the group are still hard on my heels. I think they are just letting me take the wind especially on the exposed section between miles 3 and 4.As we run through Clifton village 1 guy pulls up level with me, I recognise him as some one I do battle with quite often. We run neck and neck all the way through Clifton and Hartshead, and we drop the rest of the chasing group. On the hill up to Roberttown he takes the lead but by the top (8 miles) I have regained 3rd place. He remains just behind me down the hill and past the 9 mile marker. In the last mile I manage to pull out a lead and get 3rd place in a time of 1 hour 30secs.Martin comes in, in seventh place, Andy in the top 20 and Rodger has a good run as he continues to get back to form.Treena did well and got third lady and Heather had a good run.Bill unfortunately had to pull out after a couple of miles due to an injury.Treena and I both got matching fleece jumpers as prizes for being 3rd man and lady. Creams all very well for the ladies but its not quite me, however I last saw it hanging in Lindas wardrobe. So my training tip for a Hilly 10 mile road race is a 200 K walk over the fortnight before!http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=48 2004-10-28 07:12:14 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=48Woodys Results SummaryPlease note that you can find all these results in the results section. The Elloughton 10K Hull 8/8/04. 112 Gwen Viljoen 45:50.171 Heather Mitchell 50:03 2nd O-50.229 Colin Watson 53:18. 398 finished.Colin has a steady run.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=49 2004-10-04 07:34:14 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=49Borrowdale Fell Race 2004I had seen the marquee field yesterday driving down, and now all of rosthwaite is abuzz with runners and tourists bustling around. The sun is now hot, I buy some special ankle plasters which seem to really help my sore ankles. Then, after spotting Russel, I buy a lighter rain mac, and find a superior way of storing it in my camelbak.A result! I now feel kitted out, and there is not long to go. I toss my keys to Russels brother in law and adjust my bum bag - this is it!http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=59 2004-08-07 10:58:28 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=59Ironman AustriaRight, guys of a sensitive constitution may need to get a lady to edit my report as it concerns sections about womens matters.Disaster fell the day before with me "surfing the crimson wave"- this meant extra worry about how many powderings of my nose I would have to build in to my race plan. I mean its one thing having a pee on the go put my balance and dexterity on a bike doesn't stretch beyond opening a banana with my teeth.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=50 2004-07-04 08:45:23 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=50Coal Race is back breaking funThe coal race at gawthorpe was great fun, if not a bit hard work!Needless to say, Derek did the best out of the mens team while Moniquewalked away with 50 quid for second lady!Free buffet and a pint afterwards, you cant grumble at that!http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=1 2004-04-12 11:22:10 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=1Top night at Cross Country PresentationsThe Yorkshire Cross Country League presentations where a great success. Get the excuses in early, thats what I say!The weather was beautiful, and the sun felt worryingly strong. Several Americans hassled me over the bunny ears I was wearing - apparently pacemakers wear them in races in their parts (?). This was it, The starting canon fired, and we started to cross the verrazano-narrows bridge to a rousing New York, New York, Manhatten island was in profile across the straights - it all felt pretty awesome.http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=51 2003-11-02 06:57:53 http://www.dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk/cgi/story.php?index=51
